From July 9th to 11th, 2025, a promotional trip was organized for tour operators and media representatives, with the aim of presenting new tourism services and attractions in the cross-border area of Zlatar in Serbia and Durmitor, Sinjajevina and the Piva Mountains in Montenegro. These were developed through the project “Joint Actions for Rural Tourism Development.” The focus is on mountain tourism offers, highlighting local service providers and the natural beauty of these mountains.
Zlatar was the first to welcome the participants, showcasing its mountain trails, rest spots, scenic viewpoints, rural households, medicinal herbs, and the unique flavors of this part of Serbia. Afterwards, Durmitor, the Piva Mountains, and Sinjajevina captivated the visitors with their distinctiveness – traditional katun trails, the warm hospitality of hosts in mountain huts, vast open landscapes, and the tastes and aromas of Montenegro’s mountain peaks.
This was a unique opportunity for a joint group of participants from both countries to get acquainted with the tourism offerings of the cross-border region – in order to increase tourist traffic in the entire area and make life in these mountain regions more sustainable.
In this way, the project directly contributes to the sustainable development of local communities, which are often underdeveloped and marginalized, yet base their future on natural resources. Rural tourism can be a true development opportunity for the people living in mountain areas of both countries, especially if it is rooted in sustainable practices, which this project aimed to raise awareness of and improve.
The tourism offer of Zlatar is being enhanced through the project “Joint Actions for Rural Tourism Development” co-financed by the European Union through the IPA Cross-border Cooperation Programme Serbia–Montenegro 2014–2020.
The project is jointly implemented by the Regional Development Agency Bjelasica, Komovi and Prokletije, the Municipality of Šavnik, and the Zlatar Tourism Organization.
