Katuns represent an authentic cultural heritage of Montenegro. The inclusion of rural households in tourism offers have significant potential.
As part of the project “Joint Actions for Rural Tourism Development,” a two-day workshop was held at the end of March in Šavnik, Plužine, and Mojkovac for families from rural areas who ho stay in the summer months in the katuns on Durmitor, Sinjajevina, and the Piva Mountains.
The families who participated in the workshops are located along the thematic trail Katunski Put “Majestic Heights,” which was mapped and marked by the Regional Development Agency for Bjelasica, Komovi and Prokletije in the previous period. Since most families lack experience in providing hospitality services but have the potential for tourism activities, the workshops were organized to provide guidance and support for their inclusion in tourism offers.
The education covered topics such as: basics of hospitality, integrating rural activities into tourism (milking cows, horseback riding, collecting medicinal herbs and forest fruits, cheese production, hay gathering), key tourism resources of rural households, marketing and promotion, and legal regulations concerning rural tourism.
A special focus was placed on the gastronomic offer and the importance of preparing and serving traditional dishes made from ingredients produced on farms. Families from Montenegro will also have the opportunity to participate in a practical workshop planned at the end of April on Zlatar Mountain. The workshop will be held in collaboration with partners, the Tourism Organization of Zlatar, with a special focus on preparing dishes from wild edible plants, which are still underrepresented in the gastronomic offer.
